Building in the community of Tibang in Banda Aceh by Habitat for Humanity . Over 300 houses will be built here before the end of the year. The entire community was virtually destroyed by the December 26th tsunami.
Two Habitat for Humanity staff look out over the devestation at one of the port areas in Banda Aceh. Few buildings withstood the force of the waves. Survivors expained that the water reminded tham of a snake that snapped its way along the community, hissing as it destroyed everything in sight.
Building supplies are unloaded from a barge in Banda Aceh. These materials will build over 300 Habitat houses in by the end of the year.
Over 28,000 bags of cement took over two days to off load on to trucks and transport to a warehouse in Banda Aceh.
The massive strength the 9.0 earthquake which struck off the coast of Sumatra on December 26th, 2004 left residents in shock but there was no warning of what was to come a mera 45 minutes later. The three waves that struck Banda Aceh and other communities to the west and east coast left a area of devestation that few can comprehend to this day. In Banda Aceh the water covered a distance of over 5 kilometers (2 1/2 miles) inland. Over 160,000 were killed in a matter of minutes with over 500,000 left homeless.
